As part of the the XIXth International Oral History Conference 2016, IOHA is pleased to announce four Master Classes by renowned oral historians. Of these 3 are in English and 1 in Spanish. Each Master Class is limited to 30 participants. Please register early to ensure your place in the class.

Master Class 1: Audio-Visual History

Instructor: Albert Lichtblau is Professor at the History Department, Salzburg University, Austria. His fields of scholarly expertise are Jewish studies, genocide and migration studies, oral history and audiovisual history. Professor Lichtblau holds degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Vienna.

Abstract for Master Class

Oral history has been transformed into a new method using visual coverage of interviews. This paradigmatic shift essentially changed methodological and theoretical approaches. Visual information has a very strong impact on how the information of interviewed persons is received. Thus, for example, the ethical implications are even more complex compared to traditional oral history interviews.

Audio-visual interviews opened up a new sphere of interaction since these interviews refer to visuality and film language. Filmed interviews are often seen as sheer “talking head” coverage. There is much more we can cover using the camera’s eyes, like showing body language, private and public sphere, photographs, artifacts, rooms, interactions etc. This opened up new dimensions for our interactions as historians generating life stories, and we are still in the process of learning how to listen “and” see. We also have to reflect on how to transmit and analyze visual information of filmed interviews. It also depends on whether our product will be a text or a film (e.g. for exhibitions). This master class will give examples selected from my own work, and is open to experiments by and the needs of the participants.

Master Class 2: Talking about Partition: Reflections on the use of Oral History

Instructor: Urvashi Butalia is the co-founder and CEO of Zubaan, an imprint of Kali for Women, India’s first feminist publishing house. She has had a long involvement with the women’s movement in India. Her areas of interest include partition and oral histories from a feminist and left-wing perspective. The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of India (1998), which won the Oral History Book Association Award and the Nikkei Asia Award for Culture is her path-breaking study of the Partition of India.

Abstract for Master Class:

In this class I will trace my journey as a researcher working on the Partition of India, trying to trace the multiple histories of that moment through the lives of those who were impacted by it. I'll begin with my questions about 'traditional' history, my gradual immersion in oral history, the issues that raised for me, of responsibility, ethics, representation, mediation, subjectivity and more, and how, through that work, but parallelly, through my involvement with the women's movement and feminism in India, I came to an understanding - not a static understanding but one that is always growing - of the importance of oral history work methodologically. I would then like to lead on, from this, to our experiment in Zubaan of trying to build an oral history archive of the women's movement and some of the issues that is now raising - this last point specifically in order to look at the ongoing nature of the learnings one may gain from the practice of oral history.

Master Class 3: Through inter-subjectivity:  their feelings, our feelings and oral history “inter-views”
Instructor: Sean Field is associate professor in the Historical Studies Department at the University of Cape Town and was director of the Centre for Popular Memory from 2001 to 2012. Over the years, Sean Field has raised radical questons in the field of oral history, he served as the Vice-President of the International Oral History Association from 2008 to 2010.

Abstract for Master Class:

This workshop will focus on the primacy of inter-subjectivity within oral history fieldwork and interview dialogues.   We will discuss the following overlapping themes: firstly, naming the range of feelings and emotional states that might be evoked in fieldwork encounters. Secondly, ways to contain feelings expressed by interviewees especially memories that evoke painful losses, sadness and anger. Thirdly, ways to contain and understand researchers’ emotions, in and after, interviews. Finally, we will explore how inter-subjective analysis deepens our understanding of  the production of oral history "inter-views".

Master Class 4: Las historias de vida, entre la memoria individual y la colectiva.
Instructor: Pilar Domínguez es profesor de Historia del Pensamiento Político y Movimientos Sociales en la Universidad de Las Palmas. Dedicada al campo de la historia oral que es socio fundador del Seminario de Fuentes Orales y el Instituto de Investigaciones Feministas de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid; que fue presidente de la La Asociación Internacional de Historia Oral (2008-2010).

Resumen de la Master Class:

La relación entre el proceso de rememoración individual de las experiencias y la memoria social o colectiva, tal como la llamó Halbawchs, es uno de los principales temas de debate entre los historiadores orales del ámbito geográfico latinoamericano y de la península ibérica. Las traumáticas experiencias vividas por la población sometida a las dictaduras que asolaron numerosos países de ese ámbito en el siglo XX han contribuído a que se hayan creado unas fuertes memorias colectivas e individuales en torno a esos acontecimientos. A partir de ellas se han desarrollado interesantes proyectos de historia oral que pasaremos a comentar.

La clase consistirá en la exploración de esas memorias individuales y colectivas a través del método de la historia de vida de larga tradición entre los científicos sociales. Se hará a partir de explicaciones teóricas y ejemplos prácticos de proyectos de historia oral. Uno de los ejemplos será el proyecto de “Historia oral del sindicalismo socialista español” llevado adelante por la Fundación Largo Caballero (Madrid, España).
