MAURICIO OSSES

Mauricio Osses is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Chile. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering (University of Chile, 1992) and completed his PhD formation at the Department of Fuel and Energy, University of Leeds, U.K. (1993-1997). Dr. Osses gained his PhD in emissions from internal combustion engines at University of Leeds and worked as a research assistant for the Thermie Project, sponsored by the Ford Co. and the European Union.

Dr. Osses current research is focused on emission inventories from mobile sources, experimental measurements of vehicle emission factors, vehicle reduction techniques, urban traffic activity, regulated and non-regulated pollutants, fuel composition, alternative fuels, modeling of vehicle emissions under urban conditions and their connection with air dispersion models. Dr. Osses also works as a consultant for the Chilean Government in transportation-emissions programs.

Investigación realizada desde 1990-2003
La investigación que realicé durante mi permanencia en el programa de magíster, de la Universidad de Concepción, se focalizó en el estudio multidisciplinario del área de surgencia de Coquimbo (en el marco del proyecto JGOFS-Chile). Durante ese periodo mi investigación se orientó a entender los procesos que controlan la producción y la biogeoquímica de la región central de Chile. Para ello describimos los niveles de biomasa, nutrientes y oxígeno de esa área, para diferentes periodos, y discutimos el papel biogeoquímico de esta región. En esa primera evaluación concluimos que la surgencia costera debía ser una fuente de gases invernadero (e.g. CO2, N2O) a la atmósfera, debido a la ventilación productos respirativos del océano profundo, evidenciados por la surgencia de aguas pobremente oxigenadas y con un déficit relativo de nitrato. El resultado mas controvertido de este estudio fue constatar que la biomasa del fitoplancton era baja en aguas fertilizadas con nitrato y otros macronutrientes, así el secuestro de CO2 aparentemente era limitado por una baja producción biológica.
Mi investigación doctoral, en Goteborg – Suecia, se centró en el intercambio de dióxido de carbono (CO2) entre la atmósfera y las aguas surgentes de la región centro-norte de Chile. Para porciones de la costa Chilena estimamos los flujos de CO2 en la interfase océano-atmósfera y su variabilidad a distintas escalas espacio-temporales, así como su conexión los factores y/o procesos atmosféricos (e.g. el estrés del viento, ENOS y bajas costeras) y oceanográficos (masas de agua, distribución de la biomasa fitoplanctonica, surgencia, filamentos de surgencia, ENOS, ondas atrapadas a la costa). En este estudio comprobamos que la surgencia costera ventila aguas frías extraordinariamente ricas en dióxido de carbono.
La investigación que realicé durante mi estadía en Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution se orientó a identificar los factores primordiales que controla la biogeoquímica del C y N en la región. La hipótesis en la que actualmente trabajo plantea que en esta región de Sudamérica la biogeoquímica del C, N y Si podría estar fuertemente afectada por la abundancia de metales trazas como Fe y Cu. A fines del 2001 realizamos las primeras observaciones Fierro disuelto en las costas de Chile (a la cuadra de Coquimbo), los resultados muestran que aguas surgentes altamente fertilizadas con Nitrato y fuertemente sobresaturada en CO2, poseen concentraciones de Fe extremadamente bajas (<1nM). Estos resultados marcan un hito en el entendimiento de la biogeoquímica de la región sugiriendo que la disponibilidad de Fe en las aguas surgentes limitaría la producción primaria así como el secuestro de CO2 atmosférico. En 2002 en cooperación con Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution y el Departamento de Oceanografía de la Universidad de Concepción, realizamos experimentos para estimar el efecto del Fierro en el plancton. Los resultados confirmaron que el Fe limita el desarrollo de fitoplancton en aguas surgentes (e.g. aguas costeras frías, ricas en nutrientes y pobres en fitoplancton).
